We are a 4th generation, privately owned family company who have been involved in the wire fence manufacturing industry since 1932 where we have established a worldwide reputation for producing the highest quality machines including our latest FLM Fence Machine.
From the numerous machines, we have built, or through the various fence manufacturing companies we have owned and operated, our customers have a genuine appreciation for our products.

A History Of Wire Fence Manufacturing
UMC Innovation has a long and proud history. Being a 4th generation privately-owned family company that has been involved in the wire fence manufacturing industry for over 87 years, our family have been involved with in a number of brands including Hurricane Wire Product – Southfence, New Zealand – Solidlock USA and Canada – South Wire Australia – Fiji Wire Industries – New Guinea Wire Industries – Hurricane Wire UK.
1930s
1932
NZ Fence and Gate Works established by William Ullrich in Jackson Street, Petone in 1932.
1936
F.G.Ullrich purchased NZ Fence and Gate from his Uncle William. Hurricane Wire Products started in 1936.
1960s
1960
Developed the first ever ‘high tensile field fence’ in a confidential field trial near Wanganui.
Shortly after, John Ullrich joined the Family Business.
1970s & 1980s
1970s
Started selling wire manufacturing machinery around the world. Russia, USA, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Columbia, Iceland, Fiji, PNG, NZ, Australia.
1980s
First Stay Lokk fence machines were developed. Ullrich family sold Hurricane Wire Products and South Fence established.
1990s & 2000s
1990s
UMC established. Second generation Fixed Lokk Machine developed.
2000s
UMC Developed Mesh Lokk Double Knuckle.
2020
UMC developed the only fence machine in the world capable of producing two different types of fence knots.
